Louis Mattrs has talent to burn.
The rising songwriter seems to blossom with each release, seems to mature with each passing song. And songs are what he writes - these aren't tracks, aren't cuts, despite his modernity there's a sense of songwriting classicism running his music.
New EP 'Slow Waves' is out now, and it features the likes of LK Faith, Lucky Eck$, and production from Cadenza on 'WGW'.
An enthralling return, you can pick it up HERE or dive in below. Entranced, Clash invited Louis Mattrs to talk us through his new EP.
'Superman'
So I got together with two friends of mine (Ed Thomas & Nick Gale) and thought we should write a fun tongue in cheek type of song. We almost wrote it as a kind of joke, trying to put as many stupid lyrics in it as possible. But by the end (and a few changes later) we ended up really loving it! I then took it home to produce it with my co-producer Brad Baloo and spent endless nights tweaking it. I eventually had to say enough is enough and let it go.
'White Girl Wasted'
This song was the product of a late night studio session with Cadenza. It reminisces on an evening spent on the beach getting up to no good. I spent many of my teenage years down and out on the beach so I thought it was only right to sing about it. For me, the song felt a little unfinished and so we decided it needed a rapper to take it to the next level. I hit up Lucki Eck$ on Twitter as I was a big fan of his 'Alternative Trap' mixtape and the next day I had his verse in my inbox. The power of the Internet is a great thing.
'Sweet Innocence'
Whilst touring with fellow Brightonian Elli Ingram it was only a matter of time before we wrote a song together. She introduced me to her producer Felix Joseph and we all got in the studio. As a writer, I think it's very important not to become lazy and only write about one thing. So having that in mind, we created Sweet Innocence. The song is about losing your youthful innocence as we grow older. A subject that we can all relate to.
'Young Gun (Oh My)'
I came up with the chord structure to this song in the early hours of the morning and quickly got into the mood it. It was probably the quickest song for me to write/produce on the EP as everything seemed to just fall into place when writing about a certain someone. I'm lucky enough to work with many amazing female singers and thought Ego Ella May's voice would be perfect to sing the BV's on the song. She has such a soulful voice and gave the song that extra finesse.
'Messed Up'
This was the last song to be finished and coincidently the last track of the EP but by no means the least. I've been working & producing on LK Faith's EP and thought it was only right to get her to jump on mine. Her voice really suits both old skool and new R&B so I tried to blend the two on this track. Starting off the song on the Rhodes and then bringing the hard hitting 808s half way through the track. I thought this was a nice way switch the second verse up. I left Lauren in her own little world to finish writing the lyrics as it felt very personal to her and she sure delivered.
